Biography

Gravyboat is the solo project of Portsmouth musician Sam Cutbush. After years spent in well-established bands such as Foxer, Dead Witches, Sabres and Funeral Witch Blues, Sam wanted to see what music he produced almost entirely on his own would sound like.

The result is what we have here, a slightly modern take to blues and rock songs that sound fresh yet familiar, and touch upon mental health issues that he and others have faced in life, with the hope that comfort can be found amongst enjoyment.

Eternal Pessimist is an honest title of an honest EP in a glass-half-empty world, aiming to flip the narrative for the listener.
“This Party Sucks – Written in lockdown, about lockdown and the mental impact it had. The product of having to keep myself occupied. Didn’t mean for it to sound so 90’s initially.
Every Saturday – Came about as a result of noodling on a 12 string guitar stumbling on a riff that chimed, a little like The Cult’s She Sells Sanctuary, which soundtracked a self-reflection on mental health
Staring Into Space – Collab with Diamondback Kid, railing against the dumbing down of the working class world and the people in it.
Higher & Higher – Acoustic version of a song I wrote 15 years ago that and has been with me ever since. Bluesy in places, life-affirming in others.”
